Over the holiday season, former teen actor Tylor Chase went viral due to being spotted amidst a battle with substance abuse disorder (SUD) in the streets of Riverside County, California. It didn’t take long for his former Ned’s Declassified School Survival costars, especially that of Daniel Curtis Lee, to reach out and try to get him treatment and support for his addiction.

Upon reconnecting with Tylor, Daniel helped secure him a temporary hotel stay and free food through Blaze Pizza until the end of the holiday season. After hugging goodbye, Daniel would receive an upset call from the hotel just hours later, saying the room was out of sorts due to Tylor’s behavior.

From there, Daniel went to the internet to ask one question that anyone who has loved or cared for someone who battles substance abuse and addiction is familiar with—how do you help someone battling addiction, especially when they’re dealing with concurrent severe mental disabilities?
How to Help Loved Ones Battling Addiction
Daniel was seeking answers on how to best help loved ones, like his Nickelodeon co-star Tylor Chase, when battling addiction. Some general tips for him, and anyone else who finds themselves in this position, may look like:
Understand and educate yourself on addiction, including laws and the steps of treatment.
Offer genuine care and support while advocating for the loved one to start a program.
Practice self-care by building your own support systems so you don’t neglect yourself. This includes setting boundaries, knowing when to step away, and using healthy coping mechanisms.
State laws also heavily impact how much help someone can administer to another person in crisis. In Tylor Chase’s case, in the state of California, you cannot force someone into psychiatric treatment unless it’s through court-ordered rehab, an emergency hold, family members petition the court to mandate rehab, or the individual becomes a danger to themselves. Unfortunately, drug or substance consumption alone, even if it results in an overdose, isn’t enough. In many cases, unless committed of a felony or crime, it’s up to the individual to agree to treatment, and for someone who was once, or still is, a recognizable name, that may pose some concerns.
Receiving treatment for substance abuse is very personal, as you may start off at a low point that not many other people can see. While we don’t know the reason Tylor has allegedly refused treatment in the past, many people who were once public figures can feel swayed away from seeking help due to anxieties about being discovered, outed, or recognized. For some, money is the barrier to entry for receiving treatment for alcohol and drug addictions, but for others, ego, pride, and fear can stop people battling addiction from getting the much-needed help they deserve. In reality, there are compassionate, discreet resources available, especially for personalities, celebrities, or high-powered individuals, to help you reclaim control of your life.
Discreet Addiction Treatment
SUD is a serious, potentially fatal condition that can destroy one’s health and quality of life, so it’s crucial to seek help before it’s too late. Whether you’re a former child actor like Tylor Chase, or simply someone who values discrepancy with health matters, discreet addiction treatment is available.
HIPAA law protects “…records of the identity, diagnosis, prognosis, or treatment of any patient which are maintained in connection with the performance of any program or activity relating to substance abuse education, prevention, training, treatment, rehabilitation, or research…” This means that when you’re receiving treatment, clinicians are mandated to uphold the utmost confidentiality, protecting your client’s identity. No one, outside of you, your clinicians, and your insurance team, needs to know that you were receiving treatment for addiction and concurrent mental health conditions.
When to Seek Treatment for Substance Abuse
Knowing when and how to seek treatment, both for the individual struggling with substance abuse and their loved ones, is crucial.
Some signs it’s time to seek treatment include:
You’re experiencing physical health challenges
You cannot function without drugs or alcohol
Your personal relationships are suffering
You’re lying about your substance use
You aren’t able to quit on your own
Help is available 24/7 for anyone struggling with SUD. The only time it’s too late is when it’s too late. In 2023, Angus Cloud, another actor from HBO’s hit ‘Euphoria,’ died due to an accidental drug overdose of fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, and other drugs. [1] This tragic story doesn’t discriminate, as there are many cases, whether from someone famous or a civilian, where someone didn’t receive help when they needed it, and their life ended way too soon.
Daniel’s last video regarding his friend, Tylor, was able to be admitted to a short-term rehab facility in Southern California to start the beginning of his recovery journey. Shortly after this was announced, Daniel Curtis Lee made his final video about Tylor’s situation.
